Description

This current body of work represents a coming full circle in both my imagery and method of working. With my initial experiences as a printmaker, my interests quickly expanded beyond the traditional printmaking media toward a serious involvement in monoprints, monotypes and other forms of unique impressions. Exploration of color, form and of building images through successive reworking and layering of information, printed through multiple passes through the press created prints that were vibrant and full of energy and movement. In these images, I drew upon a love of nature, it’s rhythm, color and light.

In recent years, concepts of memory, time and of their unique and varied realities have become of great interest to me. That memory and history may be two distinctly different, yet valid narratives are of great significance. Each can be different, yet true in their own way. Object and place can both reflect history as well as evoke memories. What happens, however, when the two are layered upon one another? This has come to influence my perception of time itself. Instead of time being a line,

gaining greater and greater distance from the past as it progresses forward, I ascribe to the Native American concept of time being as layers, one on top of another. The idea that past, present and future exist simultaneously, and that we may flow freely between these layers.

In these latest works, I am attempting to address such ideas. Elements that are at once tangible, and at the same time evocative. Aspects that are both recognizable, yet at the same time, elusive. The layering and building of imagery in these latest digital photographic works, through color, light and texture is very much in keeping with my original monotype explorations. In a new way, I can explore my lifelong fascination between the past, the present and the concept of memory that ties it all together.
